Abstract

Rapid urbanization and human desire have led to a greater demand for ornamental stones such as marble and granite. The marble and granite processing industries generate huge volumes of waste and its effective use by replacing virgin aggregates can have a positive impact on the environment. In this study, the performance of bituminous mixtures consisting of 100% recycled marble aggregates and 100% recycled granite aggregates were compared with bituminous mixtures consisting of virgin granite aggregates. The performance of bituminous mixtures prepared using an unmodified bitumen and a polymer modified bitumen was evaluated in terms of the rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility which are specific to tropical climatic conditions where higher pavement temperatures are observed during summer apart from considerable rainfall during monsoon. The performance results revealed that the recycled marble aggregates and recycled granite aggregates can fully replace virgin granite aggregates only when polymer modified bitumen is used as the binder.
