FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO SELF-CARE BEHAVIOR OF EARLY POSTPARTUM MOTHERS IN RURAL NAKHON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND

Proper postpartum behavior will promote maternal health and prevent complications. The main objective of this predictive research was to determine the factors contributing to postpartum self-care behavior (PSB) and their correlation to selected variables. Power analysis was used to determine the sample size. Participants were 150 mothers who were administered a seven-part questionnaire to collect data related to their personal demographics, knowledge about PSB (K-PSB, KR-20 coefficient = 0.66), traditional beliefs (TB), social support from families (SSF), social support from health care providers (SSP), maternal-role acceptance (MRA), and PSB with Cronbach’s α at 0.87, 0.92, 0.94, 0.94, and 0.85, respectively. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlation, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that the average age of the mothers was 26.7 years (SD = 6.3). Around half (53%) had a moderate level of knowledge. The majority of mothers had high levels of traditional beliefs (3.61±0.25), SSF (4.29±0.52), SSP (4.23±0.54), and PSB (3.97±0.40) and very high level (4.63±=0.41) in MRA (the numbers represent mean values on a scale of 1-5). There were positive correlations between PSB and SSF, SSP, and MRA, at p = 0.001 (r = 0.47, 0.56, and 0.64, respectively). The SSF, SSP, and MRA increased the explained variance in PSB, accounting for 47.3% of total variance in PSB (R2 = 0.473, p<0.001). Nurses can apply the results to design family-based interventions to improve PSB and conduct additional research to examine its effects.
