PAIN CATASTROPHIZING, MENTAL TOUGHNESS AND CHANGE IN AFFECT DURING ARM-SWING-EXERCISES BY KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS PATIENTS

Abstract

Background: Elderly Thai sufferers of knee osteoarthritis (OA) show a poor response to arms swing exercise (ASE), therefore mental toughness (MT), which is one’s ability to deal with any state should be explored, including changes in negative affect at pre and post ASE (NA). However, the mediating variable pain catastrophizing (PC) seems likely to have an impact of a positive/negative affect during ASE. Aims: This study investigated NA, the relationship between MT and NA in knee OA patients, and the mediation effect of PC on this relationship. Methods: 68 Thai overweight elders with knee OA were surveyed for MT and PC before swinging their arms for 10 min, and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) was examined at pre and post ASE. T-test and simple mediation analyses were conducted for testing the relationship between all variables at the same time, and clarifying the degree to which PC mediates these relationships. Results: The patients reported a NA decrease from pre to post ASE (0.38+2.08), but it was not significant (t(67)= -1.39, p>0.05). High MT was negatively related to NA in the patients, but this relationship was not significant (b = -0.034, p = 0.070). In a simple mediation analysis, MT exerts an effect on NA, but PC showed no mediation effect, since the indirect effect size was a very small. Conclusion: ASE was not an obvious preference exercise to change patients’ positive and negative affects, even when patients were high in MT.
