Sawdust/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) composites were prepared at sawdust content of 30 wt%. Effect of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) contents on mechanical, flame retarding, thermal and morphological properties of the composites was investigated. Tensile strength, elongation at break, impact strength and thermal stability of PBS composites were reduced with increasing APP content while tensile modulus was enhanced. Flame retardancy of the composites was improved with the incorporation of 20 phr of APP. Increasing poly(butylene succinate grafted maleic anhydride) (PBS-g-MA) content resulted in the increment of mechanical properties but the reduction of thermal stability of the composites filled with APP. SEM micrographs confirmed the enhancement of compatibility of the composite and revealed some features of ductile fracture in the composites with the presence of PBS-g-MA.
