Abstract

The experimental evaluation of a received signal strength indicator ( RSSI)-based indoorlocalization system is studied in this paper. The major contribution of this work is that thewell- known and widely used min-max and trilateration methods are tested in the case ofhuman movement scenarios, and a new RSSI filter is designed and developed to directlyreduce RSSI variation caused by human movement. Experiments have been carried outin an indoor environment using low-cost, low-power 2.4 GHz wireless nodes. Theexperimental results demonstrate that in human movement scenarios, the min-max methodprovides higher accuracy than the trilateration method. Also, by applying the proposedRSSI filter, the RSSI variation and position estimation error are more decreased. Theposition estimation error decreases by 71. 28% in the case of the min- max method, and itdecreases by 73.65% in the case of the trilateration method.
